  • free ball scenario

hey guys sure i making this up

free ball scenario , opponent fouls, you can see both sides of the next nominated ball, but the extreme side of one would cause a foul, ie going in off as it’s next to the pocket

is that a free ball ?

"is it a free ball" - No
If you can see both extreme edges of the ball on, there is no free ball.

Regardless of what may or may not happen after the next stroke.

The judgement of a Free Ball is purely on where the balls come to rest, can the ball on be hit on both extreme edges by direct shot of the cue ball - if yes - no Free Ball, if no, Free Ball.

i think your wrong a pocket is basically been another ball ie if your on the yellow it’s a brown ball coz it would be a foul

          what?
you say in your first post you can see both extreme edges of the ball on - therefore no Free Ball call.
Now you throw in yellow and brown balls, if any other balls get in the way of the ball on, one or both extreme edges then there would be a Free Ball call.
A pocket is not taken into account when deciding a free ball.

THERE is still a FOUL from the stroke before - but you asked about would free ball be called - both sides can be hit by the cue ball - no free ball.

What ever MAY or MAY NOT happened is not in debate when calling a free ball.

Remember the non-offending player does not have to take a free ball, it is their choice.

In your first post you state both extreme edges can be hit by the cue ball.

You are saying that the ball on is hovering close to a pocket, and one edge if hit by the cue ball the cue ball would go into the pocket....
Still NOT a free ball call, the pocket (and also cushions) are not considered when deciding whether a free ball exists or not.
It is up to the non-offending player to decide what they do next.

If the player takes that edge and pocket the cue ball, foul. And maybe they should take up English pocket billiards

If the pocket was a Yellow or Brown, then those will be taken into account and if they impede the extreme edge of the ball on, then a free ball will be called.

The referee can only judge the NOW, they can not look into the future and see what the player may or may not do.

As already said, a Free Ball will not be call, and the non-offending player has the usual options, to play the next shot themselves, or put the offending player in.
If both extreme edges of the ball on are available the the player does not have to hit the extreme over over the pocket and, as you say, surely foul; they could play a full ball, or play the opposite extreme edge or any angle between.

Both extreme edges available, no free ball.

                  (found it)

have a look at this old post, written by a long server professional referee, about how to judge if you have a free ball.

and go to the last post to see the images that fail on the first post
