making a cue

I thought pipe cutters were designed for soft copper. Not sure how they'd fare with brass but if you could get it thin enough then maybe as the decent ones come with a de-burring tool.

Oh you could be right Shockerz, I just took it for granted they would cut other metals as well.
I had a little look around this says it can cut brass and it's cheap as chips, what kind of job it does is anyone's guess.

I'd be interested if it did. They are mini pipe cutters of the old sort that used to be for cutting pipes in tight spaces, nowadays they use a cutter called a pipe splice....like this one:

If you scroll down your one it's even got a steel drill bin in the cutter so I think they might be taking the mick with that one!

I've got a few sets in the garage so be interested what grade of brass it would cut; I'd be surprised but but never tried. Cut thousands of meters of copper over the years when I was a nipper but not much brass.

Not so sure it would cut a thick wall brass tube, might have to try some thin walled stuff!

I have one of the itsnoteasy ones, used it to cut a steel pipe on my car. I bought mine from B & Q though, a little more expensive. It would surely cut brass, just not sure how many times before it's goofed

Could you get a good cut with one of those dremel ( sp ? ) things?
How thick are ferrules , they can't be much more than a couple of mill are they?

You may find that it does cut it but it does it by denting the like as it cuts...
So you will end will have a round edge, which you will have to file flat...

The pipe cutters do leave an internal burr and the pipe cutters have an attachment on them where you can take the burr out.

If you found it dents the outside diameter of the rod then just don't tighten the cutters up too much in one go and you would barely have any indent.

The cutting blade isn't flat so it sort of cuts a "v" into the pipe or whatever you're cutting so the inner part will be out further than the outside of your ferrule. But it will cut brass, you'll just need to flatten it out after, the de-burring tool won't be enough, it just softens up the sharp edges left from the cut.

Yep. agreed the deburring tool won;t do the whole job but if you cut it carefully there's not a lot of wok just to take the edge off as brass is soft.

I've ordered a bit of tube and will do it with a couple of different tube cutters and maybe (maybe!) do a quick video.

Obviously easier to by them but sometimes it's just nice to do your own.

Pretty sure you could file it nice and flat with a drill press though, get down to Lidl

That's a good idea and would make life easier.

They don't have any in at present but I'll keep an eye out as they seem like a good price.

On the plus side if the pipe cutter does work it can also be used to cut the tenon, although I don't know how long the cutter blades will last.

Could you not cut the shaft to a certain depth then cut down to make the tenon with a craft knife , thought that might give you a nice clean straight edge for the ferrule to sit on. I could be wrong but I half remember someone saying they used one, but I might be making that up.

Funnily enough I have done that today but it's not easy to get it perfect and not my preferred method.

I normally just use a tenon cutting machine as they are very accurate but awaiting spares at the moment!
