  • Will the black joint 'chip' or 'wear' away and leave bare metal 'chips' etc over time then mike?

    Comment

    • good question.

in normal use, it will not just chip or wear off, so it should be fine for the life of the cue.

it's harder than brass but like any metal, if it's whacked about, it's possible to dent and damage it.

but this is a completely new idea, so we'll just have to see over time what does and does not happen....

      • No problem, Jason, you should be " happy with the main splicing" as I and a lot of forum members think that you have got this spot on.I was initially hoping for a total butt length of 21"-22" but we can discuss this in Feb.Enjoy the New Year, all the best,Mick.

        • do your joints prevent future misalignment of the centre point (as in the butt handle would turn off to the right side)?
these are wood to wood joints by the edge, what's keep them from being damaged? joint protectors??

Poolqjunkie can you please put back the reply to jonnylovessn8ker that I read last night? I don't know why you removed it cos it answered the question very well and summed up a lot of misconception I feel.

Jonnylovessn8ker - F1 joint appears to exhibit very little wear issue. Only time will tell but at the moment I would say it is more likely to stay in position than other joints. Although I can't guarantee cos it's something that needs to be monitored over years.

I will be producing a joint protector but I don't think they are necessary really. I have rarely come across joints that are actually damaged and apart from a real freak accident I fail to see how any joint needs protecting in normal circumstances. And in the unlikely event of a mishap, as pqj pointed out in the 'ghost' post, it is easier to repair a dent in ebony than it is a dent in brass.

Also, and a very important feature, I've already thought of protection anyway cos the extended location pin in the female joint offers a built in protection that no other joint has ever offered. It prevents the joint face from from any contact other than normal use when the joints meet. When your cue is on the floor, it is the pin that touches the floor, not the joint face. So, even the face should remain virtually unscathed and unmarked, barring incidents with sharp pointy things or grit between the joint faces...

Exactly the point I was making really. People just automatically using it, but it hardly makes sense to.

I will have the website updated shortly where all features should be fully explained.

                        lol. i'm not surprised.

perhaps people will understand why it is irritating to me when people say sd joint now.

and why they should be corrected.

                          • Hi Mike,
I just felt that since it was your joint, out of respect I should let you answer the question, plus I felt that he was directing that question towards you--so probably he wants to hear it from you.
                            Basically what I said was:
I do not believe that misalignment is mainly determined by whether the joint is wood to wood or not.
Also, to protect the wooden edge from getting damage requires just the same kind of care as when one tries to protect the rest of the cue from getting dented. For example, if you drop your shaft and it hits a sharp edge it will get dented. You just need to be careful.
Lastly, I have seen lots of cues with deep dents at the brass joint, and/or on the butt end where the extension joint is. Those are very hard if not impossible to repair sometimes unless you replace the joint; while if you dent your ebony, you can repair it much easier and if you do a very good job, it can look like new.

                            • Totally agree with MW in that joint protectors are not really necessary (except butt joint protectors on hard/tiled floors,we dont all play on carpeted floors)and as to wear in " wood to wood joints " ,if you maintain and look after your cue,you should not have any problems at all.I sent j.pegs to "pooljunkie" under a " spot the joint " title ,of a Riley Burwatt, centre jointed, wood to wood cue I have and even in macro mode the joint is nearly perfect and that is after over 20yrs of use.If anything the joint is still bedding in,mind you it was one of the Burwatts made by Aeon,so it was a good example to begin with.
