missneworleans, you can have the point!

It was indeed the broadcaster, ITV, who appealed for the matches to be shortened, and also for the start time to be delayed until 2pm instead of 1pm for the afternoon session.

The reason wasn't actually about coverage but about costs. Union agreements meant ITV's costs were much higer if the lighting was switched on before 2pm! And that led to the shortening of the matches because a best-of-11 starting at 2pm, with an evening session due at 7 o'clock, made overrunning very likely indeed. This in turn would have led to further cost increases because overtime would have to be paid after 12:15 so they weren't keen to go much beyond midnight.

Best-of-23 actually - that was the norm for the time.

No, it wasn't a player or any other individual; it was a business/company/etc which had a reason for wanting them to be shortened.

I guess it was either Silvino Francisco that requested it shortened, and a guess was at the reason was possibly due to flight times for them to return home after the tournament? Either that, or someones wife in labour and they had to leave to attend the birth?

I think the 4 venues for qualifying was to save travelling distance - if you think, this was the very early days of large qualifying rounds - so they had one in the north and one in the south. Only guesswork really. The Chesterfield and London venues were used for the later rounds and the other two for the earlier rounds.

Can we get a clue Statman?
Well, when initially organised, it was supposed to be best-of-11 throughout. But a specific party requested/insisted that it be shortened and I will accept as a correct answer the identity of the party who got it shortened along with a brief supposition as to why it was.
