    ROUND ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIX

Fred breaks off and leaves a shot on. Billy, being in a confident mood strolls up to the table and knocks in a long red followed by a pink. He then takes the next 6 reds with blacks before missing the 8th red.

Fred is shaken by this dazzling display of wonderful shot making but still manages to hold his nerve and knock in the loose red. He Takes a black and then pots the next 6 reds each with a black.

There is one red left and its up at the baulk end, He manages to get it but can only get position for a baulk colour. He pots the colour and then successfully knock in the next three balls before agonisingly missing the next.

Billy's mood lifts as a brief glimmer of hope surfaces. He then knocks in the next two balls cleanly. Oh dear, his head is in his hands the frame is over.

Why? What was the final score?

Really hope I got that right.

Swell, what do I do now?
I am of a good mind to give everybody 1/2 a point now, hoping there won't be any steward's enquiry.
Don't like the Pong too much in the final solution, I had

    Noon
    Song
    Ice
    Hand
    Pot ...(think snooker people)
    Cat
    Eat

scoreboard to follow in a sec...

very nice guesses so far (bowties), but I am afraid, not what I was looking for.
So, here a few little hints:
    1) it is a snooker player
    2) I don't like 'tot' as a common word
    3) the 'i' is good...

Or for an equally well-known top snooker star, how about MELLISH?

    MOON

Let's try one of those missing letters/anagram puzzles:

So, following are a series of common English words with missing first letters. These have to be found and rearranging them, you will find a snooker related word:

    1) _oon
    2) _ong
    3) _ce
    4) _and
    5) _ot
    6) _at
    7) _at

The first person finding the word that I had in mind will get a full point. Good alternatives may be worth 1/2 point.
Just like his chances of winning, when I watched him get hammered 5-0 by Steve Davis in Newport in February, I don't think there is much hope here, but I'll try anyway with GILBERT:

    BOON
    GONG
    ICE
    LAND
    TOT
    RAT
    EAT

I’m just back from having played another frame of snooker against my pet chimpanzee Charlie. It wasn't nearly as ridiculous as the previous frame - in fact, it seemed perfectly normal - no free balls, no balls forced off the table, no potting more than one ball in one shot, no pocketing the wrong ball... actually, there were no fouls or anything remotely unusual at all.

Interestingly, we each potted every colour at least once during the frame. However, I had the upper hand: I potted more yellows than Charlie, more greens than Charlie - come to think of it, more browns, blues, pinks and blacks than Charlie! I just could not seem to miss a ball!

So how did the cheeky chimp beat me again? And by how much did he win?
So, for those who did not spot the sneaky trick here, or understand how snookersfun's answer satisfied the question:

"I potted more yellows than Charlie" - straightforward

"more greens than Charlie" - straightforward

"....come to think of it, more browns, blues, pinks and blacks than Charlie!" - this means that the number of browns+blues+pinks+blacks (combined) that I potted was more than Charlie managed... it does not necessarily mean that I potted more of each colour individually.

So, I potted 8 "browns, blues, pinks and blacks" (combined), to Charlie's 7 - but he potted more blacks than I.
