  • 2020 Masters - QF discussion

Interesting QF line-up then, with 6 of the top 8 seeds going out in the 1st round, and of course O'Sullivan not showing up in the first place.

When we got to this stage of the UK Championship, I talked about how Mark Allen was the only player still left in the tournament who had won an event of that size in the reasonably recent past. We have the same situation here. Perry, Carter, Gilbert and Wilson have never won an event with this kind of prestige. Murphy, Bingham and Higgins (if you count the International Championship) last won one in 2015, and Maguire last won one way back in 2004. What a chance they all have to either win the biggest title of their career here, or at least their biggest title in the last four years and a bit.

Difficult to call them, but I think Murphy should beat Perry and Higgins will win against Carter.
I find the lower section way more difficult to call.

Personally I think the tournament has become a bit dull with the names who has gone out, but yes it?s a great chance for the players still in the tournament. And it?s really hard to predict a winner. John Higgins has been playing well for a long period, but still he isn?t quite the player he used to be.

I can't understand why Higgins went for the pink and not the blue, that would have given easy position the next red?

Pretty dreadful stuff from Higgins tonight. He is one of only two higher seeds to come through the 1st round, but there is no way he will be going any further by playing like this. Looks like Murphy is the man to beat in the top half.

Higgins doesn't play the percentages like he used to and throws away frames on the gamble of one shot. That brown was the prime example of a shot he should have knocked safe but instead he goes for the pot, misses and loses the frame. He doesn't seem to batten down the hatches and grind out winning frames like he used to.

What a joke and John Virgo is right to make a big deal about it. The ref calls a foul, the player objects even though the video footage proves it's a foul and the ref retracts the call of a foul. Those points could make a big difference in the frame and match so poor call from the ref.

Why are people posting about the current position of this tournament in the QF thread?

Mind you, you could argue posting in the 1st round thread makes no sense either.

What thread should we post in?

Could still be some way to go in this match, but at least it's got a lot more entertaining with Higgins raising his game from 4-1 down.

Ali Carter leads 5 - 3 despite a highest break of 35. Would that have happened against a John Higgins from 20 years ago?

Love Ali and hope he wins but that stat alone tells you what you need to know about how John Higgins is playing. It's not about form it's about shot selection and John used to be the best up there with Hendry. It's all about creating opportunities with safety play and frame winning breaks that they could both do with ease but Higgins doesn't seem to have the stamina anymore to get over the line.
