Yeah, that's the one thing that keeps me biased, too... I still feel sorry for him when he's struggling like he did since he's declining.

Well, that was some session of snooker from Higgins. 600+ points in 9 frames, 3 centuries and a 96% pot success rate. He's probably p*ssed that he couldn't continue.

So much for him saying a couple of years ago he was just a journeyman

Haven't seen him very often in recent times, seems like he properly upped his game.

Ronnie looks a bit flat but he does enough, just. And he's gettin some run of the balls here and there, I must say.
Yes a very good match I thought and as you say, Gilbert gave Ronnie a good run for his money.

He had more bad luck than good, Gilbert had 3 chances in one frame and put Ronnie straight back in! He played well though, pot success of 93% and 94% didn't seem intimidated at all, went for everything which unfortunately gave Ronnie quite a few easy starters.

Says it all BBC switch off just as it gets interesting, can't even manage both tables on the red button, whilst Eurosport have devoted both channels to it!

When you've been struggling for some time, being in this pressure cooker that Sheffield is and wasting chances after chances, at some point I think your mind is gone and you want to get out of here as soon as possible. Ask ronnie how many times he felt that way. the Crucible can be a very lonely place when you're playing cr*p while you know you have all the talent in the world.

He also needs to lose some weight and definetely find a way to control his anger...
I really like him as a player.
So do I and I really feel for him. He's my favorite player with Higgins. I agree with you about his health. He used to drink like a fish for what I've heard but he said recently in an interview with Jimmy White that he cut his consumption drastically and is much more reasonnable now at tournaments. But he should hit the gym and get fitter. He would help him for sure. He's no Stephen Lee but still overweight. Physical and mental coaching....this is what he needs to do.

It is a shame really because Maguire is blessed with natural talent. His cue action is immaculate and he is such a heavy potter (no pun intended :P) that he should have won more titles by now, even a world crown maybe....but the issue here is clearly mental. At 7-3 down, he got snookered and didn't even bother trying to escape properly. He just threw a missile with the white which went overboard actuallyu....like he didn't really care.

As I was writing this, I just came accross an article published this morning on the Beeb where Stevie says to be embarrassed by his attitude and the fact not being motivated during the match:
    http://www.bbc.com/sport/snooker/36068836

It is an interesting read that backs my comments above. He really needs to see someone to help him out. When you see the wonders Dr Steve Peters did with Ronnie, he should pay him a visit....Blimey, he's too good of a player to let it go like this. Like McManus says : when in the zone and motivated, he is "an absolute animal..."

MacGuire : "The problem was I didn't feel anything. It's terrible. It's embarrassing that you can't get up for a match at the World Championship, especially being lucky enough to actually qualify for it.

If you don't get a buzz from the world championships Stephen then, perhaps it's time to hang up your cue!

I've said before on this site that if I was a sports/snooker coach then, this would be the one guy I'd want to go with. He has loads on natural ability and Ronnie once said that "he was the real deal".

His temperament has and probably always will be his achilles heel.
