I think he thought to himself I don’t believe I can win the title with this cue, if I change the tip & ferrule there is no pressure on me if it doesn’t work out and I play awful.

Add to that who would he least mind losing to out of the remaining players and there you have it. Sabotaged himself.

Seriously though, this is the worst he's played during the championship, so the decision to change is literally as you said, sabotaging himself. I look forward to his explanation after but we know it will be riddled with nonsense but it won't stop the pundits saying without the tip issue he would've won the title.

If I was Ronnie I'd be walking into the nearest snooker club and buying a cue off the rack and using that for the evening session, can't be any worse than the piece of junk he's used this morning.

So Ronnie had his titanium ferrule changed to a brass one, wouldn't the cue need lengthening (to the original length) due to the loss of the tenon at the top? Or is he playing with a shorter cue?

Couldn't you just trim down the tenon- presumably titanium ferrules have thinner walls?

He must have some spare cues. He would have been better off getting a brass ferrule on one of his spares, rather than sabotaging himself and being left with no way back. Sad way for him to bow out if this is his last world championships.

Zhao's toughest matches so far were before the Crucible, qualifiers rounds 2 and 4 vs Zehuang and Slessor, both finished 10 - 8.

I was concerned before he even hit a ball today just looking at him. The unkempt facial look, the sad eyes staring into space etc. had the Jack Nicholson look today which is usually a bad sign.

I didn’t think we’d see a bigger meltdown for the rest of the WorldS than Luca losing the last five frames from 8-all in the quarters against Trump but Ronnie’s 0-8 second session of this semi against Zhao Xing takes the cake, unfortunately.
But at the same time we shouldn’t forget how brilliant both Trump and Xing are playing to take full advantage of the chances given to them.

Yep sometimes when a player starts missing normal straight forward shots it can also be contagious on their opponent but Trump and Xing were adept enough to make sure that didn’t affect them.
